The Hotel de Salm was started in 1782, yet not fully completed until 1788 and it was during this time that Thomas Jefferson, who founded the American Declaration of Independence and lived in Paris while being the United States Minister to France, used to walk past this mansion house daily. He admired the building so much that his Monticello home in Virginia, America, was redesigned with a dome.

Well, the Hôtel de Salm is located in the 7th arrondissement just next to the Musée d'Orsay. If you're standing facing the Musée d'Orsay, the Hôtel de Salm is the next building to the right, just past rue de la Légion d'Honneur. A fellow history lover told me the story about it just before my last trip to Paris and I made it a mission to see it.

The Hôtel de Salm became the Palace of the Legion of Honor in 1804. It houses the residence of the Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor, and the administrative services of the Institution. Its eastern wing accommodates the Museum of the Legion of Honor and the Orders of Chivalry.
