Kīholo Bay is a protected series of calm, turquoise tidepools inside a picturesque bay. It's a great place to spend a beach day, especially if you want to be a little more off the beaten path. This bay used to be a bit "loved to death" by tourists and locals, but conservation efforts have really improved the location over the past few years.

Kīholo Bay is located in the ahupua`a (historic land division) of Pu`u Wa`awa`a in the North Kona District on the Big Island of Hawaii. the land surrounding the bay is flanked to the South by a lava flow from Mount Hualalai ca. 1801 and another flow from Mauna Loa in 1859.

Built during the monarchy of King Kamehameha I in 1820, as an engineered fishpond, it spanned approximately 2 miles with a 6-foot high by 20 feet wide lava rock wall, protecting the bay from the ocean currents. In 1859, a lava flow from the Mauna Loa volcano, reached Kiholo Bay and devastated the southern portion of the ancient fishpond.

Camping at Kiholo is allowed on weekends only (Friday-night through Sunday-night). Camping sites may be reserved up to 30 days in advance. Campsites are located along an unimproved gravel access road in a shaded kiawe (mesquite) grove fronting an 'ili'ili (pebble) beach. This is a remote area with no facilities and NO WATER .
