December 30, 2023 by Ana Veiga Sometimes the interior of Portugal feels like stepping back in time. Every town and village seems littered with castles and ruins, and it seems like life has slowed down. Contents show No place more so than in historic Monsanto, in Central Portugal.

Monsanto is one of the most unique and charming villages of Portugal. The village perches atop a hill and is intertwined with the giant boulders than balance close to summit. These colossal boulders have taken the position of houses, had their bases excavated to be used as animal pens and are even combined into some houses.

In 1938 Monsanto was voted the 'most Portuguese village in Portugal'. Since then it has been protected by building regulations that ensure the village retains an almost preternatural charm. Granite cottages are squeezed in amongst giant boulders, many of which form part of the houses themselves, as walls or steps, in a picturesque, higgledy-piggledy fashion.

Monsanto (Idanha-a-Nova) is a unique Medieval village in Portugal where many of the houses are sandwiched between, or even under, giant granite boulders. When I stumbled upon Monsanto, I felt like I'd found a very special little place — and I now rate it as one of my top places to visit in Portugal.
