Schloss Ehrenburg wurde im 16. Jahrhundert als repräsentative Stadtresidenz unter den Coburger Herzögen errichtet. Im Jahre 1543 hatte Johann Ernst von Sachsen-Coburg den Bau, der an die Stelle eines aufgehobenen Franziskanerklosters treten sollte, in Auftrag gegeben.
