The serval (Leptailurus serval) is a wild cat native to Africa. It is widespread in sub-Saharan countries, except rainforest regions. Across its range, it occurs in protected areas, and hunting it is either prohibited or regulated in range countries. It is the sole member of the genus Leptailurus.Three subspecies are recognised. The serval is a slender, medium-sized cat that stands 54-62 cm.

As a general rule, servals are not fond of arid areas. They prefer wetter habitats where rodents tend to be densely populated, with the exception being the central tropical rainforests of Africa, where they are notably absent. Servals have the longest legs (proportionally) of all Africa's cats, whereas leopards have shorter legs and a much longer tail. In comparison a serval's black-tipped tail is just 30-40 cm long.
