RWBY used poser pro and maya, however for someone who doesn't have a lot of money which would be better to use, mmd or blender? Also I'd like to know the pros and cons of both if possible. About your pros and cons though, yes you can import Source characters into Blender, but a lot of the things like rigs are incompatible, so you'd have to make those again, you mentioned that SFM however has all the models you need, if that's so, don't bother getting into more complicated software, it's be ridiculously difficult to make, say, a TF.
