La preziosa scultura, rinvenuta nei primi anni del XVII secolo nei pressi delle terme di Diocleziano, venne affidata nel 1620 a Gian Lorenzo Bernini per reintegrarne il piede sinistro e per realizzare un materasso con cuscino in marmo dove adagiare la statua.
