The Tiger II was a German heavy tank of the Second World War. The final official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. B, often. Henschel won the design contract, and all Tiger IIs were produced by the firm. Two turret designs were used in production vehicles.

The VK 45.01 (P), also informally known as Tiger (P) or Porsche Tiger, was a gasoline-electric drive heavy tank prototype designed by Porsche in Germany.Losing to its Henschel competitor on trials, it was not selected for mass production and the Henschel design was produced as the Tiger I.Most of the already produced chassis were rebuilt as Elefant tank destroyers.

And yet, the first Tiger II tanks were still built before the turn of 1944. The first prototype, V1, was completed in October, followed by V2 and V3 in December. Series production started in January, but ongoing problems with the new Olvar B transmission, kept Henschel struggling to meet their Tiger II quotas.

Early in 1935, Henschel began manufacturing Panzer I tanks. During World War II, the firm was responsible for license production of the Dornier Do 17Z medium bomber, and in 1939-1940 it began large-scale production of the Panzer III. Henschel was the sole manufacturer of the Tiger I, and alongside Porsche the Tiger II.

Between the Tiger (VK45.01) and Tiger II (VK45.03), Henschel developed an interim concept for a Tiger with frontal armor sloped back at 50 to 60 degrees from the vertical. (Frontal armor sloped at less then 40 degrees was also suggested.) The Tiger II was to use a double-interleaved roadwheel system instead, a system which was on the drawing-board at Henschel by mid-October 1942, the same month the VK45.02(H) was being killed off. The question, therefore, is whether this improved Tiger would have used the same triple-interleaved suspension or the new double-interleaved type.

Rival firm Henschel began designing a KwK 43 armed tank in October 1942. Their hull design, originally known as VK.45.03, was approved for production as the Tiger II. Krupp had been given a contract to design and build turrets for the VK.45.02(P) - the Porsche version.
