Marilyn D'Angelo. October 8, 2015. Without fanfare or noteriety, one South Philadelphia bakery had the honor of baking for Pope Francis. Gus Sarno is a fourth generation owner and baker at Isgro Pastries. It has been family-owned for more than 111 years and calls itself the oldest in the city. Isgro stopped by WHYY for an unrelated book event.

In 1960, they changed the name Sarno's to Allegretti's and moved the bakery to Park Ridge. Linda Ahern, Allegretti's daughter, who runs the business now with her brother, said the Park Ridge location was a disaster. There wasn't enough Italian clientele for an Italian bakery to work. So they "limped along" for two years, she said, before moving.

As a young teenager in Sicily, Mario Isgro's innate cooking skill earned him a chance to study culinary arts 1,100 miles away in pastry-obsessed Vienna. He excelled in baking and brought his craft to Philadelphia in 1904. Mario opened Isgro Pastries in the food-centric Italian Market at 1009 Christian Street—where it still stands today.

This is a long shot and not sure if I am even posting in the right place. I am trying to find people who used to order cakes from Sarnos. Specifically a cake that had chocolate, rum and pistachios. When I was a child we ordered this cake for every birthday. My family has very fond memories of the cake and I am trying to recreate it for my father's 90th birthday. The thing is I don't.

Dino Sarno, who was the bakery side of Sarno's, with his mother and daughter made the best cannoli in the city. At Christmas time Dino made torroni, it was a treat. The daughter Angela, with her husband, runs a little cafe across the street called Mama Mia. At one time Vermont Ave. had 2 Italian delis along with Sarnos.

The Sarno family moved into an apartment upstairs, a caryatid (a pillar statue of a Greek goddess) guarding the door, while downstairs they set to work in the newly christened Sarno's. Working in the bakery was a family affair, with the children placing cherries on the cookies their parents had just made.
