Why is the placement of drive sprockets on tanks important? While watching tank chats I've noticed several times that some tanks have drive sprockets at the front while some have sprockets at the rear. Why is that the case? Are there advantages in having them placed on one end or the other? This thread is archived

Make an undimensioned but center constrained circle. Start adding line segments onto the circle where both ends are attached to the circle and to the end of another line. If you want 20 sprockets, add 20 lines. Make all the lines equal length and dimension one to your tread length. Now add a reference dim to the circle.

The meaning of the gear ratios in the above paragraph is, for every rotation of the drive shaft coming out of the transmission and going into the final drives and differential has to spin 2.84 times to spin the sprocket output shafts one turn. What determines the Transmissions output rpm is what gear it is in, and what ratio that gear is.

Drive sprocket location in tanks I was just wondering why the WWII German tanks, for the most part, had front drive sprockets, where as the allies, notable exception for the Sherman, seem to have rear drive sprockets. What would be biggest factors for having them at the front or rear?

DIY Scaled-Tank. I use 9 track plates and made a close loop with a rink inside and by rolling the packing tape around until the inside diameter was OK. This give me the size of my drive sprocket 220mm. Then using plywood i started to divide and make my sprocket to fit this configuration. This is my CAD drawing compared with the hand made is.

Modern tanks (like Abramses and Leopard 2s) have the power plant as a single unit that can be pulled in a giant block-- they also tend to be rear-drive, and if you look at a pulled power plant from one of them you can see where they attach directly to the final drives on the drive sprockets.
