Lord of the Rings is a seminal work and one of the classics of the field. ASOIAF isn't nearly in the same class. The only thing that really distinguishes it from any number of other modern works is that it got a television show made from it. It also suffers considerably from the way it was written.

Well, perhaps it is just one man's opinion, but yeah, it isn't as good as ASOIAF. The problem of WoT is that it is generic fantasy series. Jordan is brilliant in world-building and even though there is too many of characterization based on nationality (not all people from one country are the same), the series offers some interesting plots.

Both series are slow paced. Major difference is WoT is is higher key fantasy, ASoIaF is more low key. (So far.) I personally love WoT more as I love more fantasy and the battle of good vs evil. ASoIaF is totally different on that so far, it's more realistic and political. Both can be quite slow and full of menial plot.
