Opened in July 1917, Camp Greene was a military training facility located in west Charlotte where tens of thousands of recruits were trained before being deployed to Europe to fight and, in many cases, die in World War I. When the war ended on November 11, 1918, Camp Greene was no longer needed, and the facility was soon dismantled.
