AT Devil's Fork Trailhead: From the I-26 Temple Hill Exit, go south on Old Asheville Highway. Turn right onto TN-352 (Devil's Fork Rd) and the parking area is on the left at the TN/NC state line.. Hiking south towards Sams Gap is about 13.5 miles of trail that includes high rock overlooks and the 5,516-foot high Big Bald Mountain.

General Information Directions: This trail is in the Shining Rock Wilderness Area: From the Pisgah District Ranger Station/Visitor Center parking lot, turn right (north) on US 276.Proceed 14 miles north to, and under, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and then approximately 2¾ miles further to the auxiliary Big East Fork parking area, which is unsigned, and on the left before the highway bridge.

Ivestor Gap Trail (#102) is an abandoned roadbed behind a gate on the east side of the parking lot. (The roadbed is open to motor vehicles from mid-August until January 2; however, it is highly recommended that only high-clearance, 4-wheel-drive vehicles attempt to negotiate it, as the trail surface is rocky and rough for the first two miles.)
