As can happen with such popular drinks, the recipe soon went off the rails. Today Pat O'Brien's is one of the most popular bars in New Orleans (especially among tourists), and the Hurricane remains one of the city's iconic drinks. Unfortunately, the glowing red drink you'll be served in the glass that bears its name is made with a weird-tasting fruity premix, packages of which are available.

This Hurricane Mocktail is a naturally sweet blend of passion, pineapple and citrus juices, with raspberry-lime sparkling water as a pink upper layer. Garnished with maraschino cherries, this recipe is free of red dyes and doesn't need simple syrup. Enjoy for Mardi Gras or any festive occasion! In looking to celebrate Mardi Gras in a couple of days, I got excited about the Hurricane Mocktail.

1 1⁄2 ounces orange juice. 12 pieces ice. 1 ounce grenadine. carbonated lemon-lime beverage (I use citrus drop from krogers) put the ice in shaker, and add the tropical punch and the orange juice, (or lemon)and shake throughly. pour into hurricane glass. pour the grenadine over the juices,WITHOUT STIRRING! Pour soda ON TOP to fill GLASS .

To a large cocktail shaker with ice, add white rum, dark rum, orange juice, pineapple juice, cranberry juice and 1 1/2 Tbsp grenadine. Add lid and shake until cocktail shaker is frosted and very cold to the touch. Fill a hurricane glass and add 1 tsp grenadine to bottom of the glass. Top with ice and then strain the shaken cocktail into the glass.
